Evelyn just said her first word this morning! Well, first besides Mamamamama and Dadadadadad.
Bird.
We were sitting on the floor and playing with the little purple bird that Casey gave her. I told her "Evelyn, that's a bird," and she said "buuuhhh." I repeated "bird," and she said it! "BIRD."
I'm so proud of my girl!

two milestones in one day!
Yesterday Evelyn finally started holding her own bottle! I'm not sure if she's doing this early or late (probably late), but I'm so glad she's finally doing it! She first did it months and months ago, but then stopped. It's like she just wanted to prove she could, but then didn't want to be bothered with it anymore.
She also began clapping. She mimics me when I do it, a huge grin on her face.
When Kevin saw her just grab her bottle and stick it in her mouth, and then put it down and clap, he was amazed and exclaimed "Who IS this kid?!"

mama!
Yesterday was a day I've been looking forward to for a long time - Evelyn started saying Mama!
Well, technically it's mamamamamamamama. And she doesn't associate it with me yet. But it's a super fun step towards that!
My baby is 8 months old today. We're going to have to wait until tomorrow to post her monthly photo though. She and I both have colds, although Evelyn is feeling worse than I am. In addition to the general teething pain she's in, she also caught Kevin's cough. Poor baby. She's just feeling miserable, I can tell. So I'm not getting much done around the house this week, but I'm getting some good snuggle time in with my girl.
Kevin and I have plans to celebrate Valentine's Day tomorrow, but I think they're off. A sick baby needs her mama and daddy, so we'll probably spend the weekend home together. Maybe next weekend.

saber-toothed baby
Evelyn got her first tooth yesterday! A sharp little tooth broke skin on her bottom gum. We can't see it, but we can definitely feel it!
She was such a trooper. Last week was rough, although I didn't know why. Evelyn was just fussy all week long. She didn't eat or sleep quite as well as usual either. I thought she was just having a bad week - we're all entitled to them. The thought of teething crossed my mind, but she didn't seem to have the symptoms. Her gums weren't red or swollen, no fever, no throw up, no excessive drooling. And I never felt anything when I put my finger in her mouth.
Then yesterday, on our way to my parents' house to watch the Superbowl, Evelyn put my finger in her mouth. I thought I felt something hard, but she didn't let me look, and I chalked it up to wishful thinking. But then my mom felt around too, and declared that Evelyn had a tooth! I promptly grabbed my baby and hugged her, telling her how proud I was of her.
It's nice to know that there was a reason for Evelyn's fussiness last week.

old yeller... plus dancing
Evelyn has this hilarious yelling/grunting thing that she does now. The strange part is, she only does it around me. Kevin was taking care of her last night while I was painting in the kitchen and Evelyn didn't do it once. But when she saw me walk in the room, she started up. So funny. So I recorded it this morning.
She also started dancing for the first time this morning. And I caught that on the video too! We had baby praise music on in the background, and she heard it between yells. You can see her turn around and listen, then start bouncing and dancing. So glad I caught it!

rock and roll
Evelyn has new talent: rolling around the floor or her crib.
She rolled over for the first time about a month (?) ago. Back-to-tummy, she totally skipped tummy-to-back. But after doing it a couple times that day, she seemed content knowing that she could do it and just stopped. Seriously, she didn't do anything else. But this week, as the two of us lay on our backs reading in her room, she did it again. No struggling or getting stuck, she just flipped over. I yelled for Kevin to come in and when I turned her back over, she did it again (the first milestone he's been able to witness).
I'm her number one cheerleader.
Evelyn still gets stuck on her tummy though, and just gives up. She won't flip back over. Silly girl.
Along with this new-found talent, she has started to roll over and sleep on her tummy or side at night. I still put her down on her back, but in the morning she's at the other side of her crib, head where her feet were, and on her tummy or side. So funny. That's something we have in common - I HATE to sleep on my back.

growing up
My little girl is growing up. Here are just a few things that she's started doing over the last couple weeks:
She rolls from her back to her side regularly. Every once in a while she makes it all the way to her tummy.
She consciously reaches out and grabs toys / hands / hair when dangled in front of her.
We have started trying to feed her rice cereal. Not much luck yet because of her tongue issue, but we're working on it!
She laughs more frequently. Mostly at me. But this afternoon I left her in her bouncer in the kitchen while I went to get the laundry and I could hear her laughing to herself. She's trying all kinds of new noises: laughing, shrieking, squealing - all with a big smile on her face.
She pays attention to the pictures when I read her a book.
She had her first haircut. It is no longer 3 inches sticking straight up from her head.
She wears 6-month clothes. There are a few things that are even bigger than that, 9 months.
She puts weight on her feet when you hold her upright.
She thinks I'm the funniest person alive. I hope she doesn't outgrow that too soon.

first dance
Evelyn had her first dance on Friday night. At only 3.5 months old, she waltzed with our friend Chad to Moon River. Little flirt then went right to sleep in his arms.
And our poor baby is sick. She has been for most of this week. I'm pretty sure it's just a cold, but her nose is super stopped up and it's sometimes hard for her to breathe. No pacifiers for her this week! It is heartbreaking to have a sick baby. I may take her to the farmer's market tomorrow, but other than that, we plan on staying in and cuddling and sleeping and getting well.

milestone
Evelyn rolled over today!
While playing on the floor, she rolled from her back to her side, then over to her stomach. The whole process took about a minute. And Ruby was playing with us, so when Evelyn rolled to her side and started grabbing the dog's face and ears, Ruby just gave her a lick. It was the cutest thing ever to see my girls playing together!

milestone
This afternoon Evelyn laughed for the first time. And I spent the rest of the day trying to get her to do it again.
