summer pinterest challenge

Fair warning, this post has absolutely nothing to do with my amazing daughter, for whom this blog is named.

I read a number of craft / home improvement blogs on a regular basis.  One of my favorites is Young House Love, and Sherry from YHL is co-hosting a Pinterest Challenge.  If you've never heard of Pinterest, it's basically a website where you can "pin" photos of everything from recipes to photography inspiration to pretty men.  It sort of bookmarks everything you like so that you can see it all together and easily reference it later.  Not gonna lie, I waste way too much time on Pinterest.

The hosts of the Pinterest Challenge inspire us to stop pinning and actually create something based upon something we've pinned.  Here are the hosts, linked to their completed projects: Sherry, Katie, Kate, & Michelle.  So without further ado, I present:

The Salvaged Drawer Bookcase

Here is the photo I pinned as inspiration, months ago:

my version = rad sauce
You always see junky old dressers on Craigslist with a drawer missing, so I thought I could perhaps use some of those.  But the crafty gods were smiling down at me when our neighbors were evicted and left a ton of trash on their curb, including 7 drawers.  I'm not sure if they're from a kitchen or desk or what, but whatever.

First on the agenda was to let them air out, because they reeked of cigarettes.  So in the garage they sat.  Then I came home one day to find that Kevin had screwed them all together, not in the arrangement I had imagined, but in a much cooler, abstract way.  Proud of that guy for thinking outside the box - not at all like him.

I used Kilz to cover everything once (and kill the remainder of the smell), and then painted it a white paint+primer that we had left over from the kitchen for the drawers.  I found some minty/coral wrapping paper that I liked from World Market.  I color matched some paint to the green of the wrapping paper, and painted the bottoms of the drawers / back of the bookcase in that green.  In two drawers I Mod Podged the paper to the back.  Then we let it dry before Kevin attached it to the wall (the Little Monster will be pulling on it any day now).  Books and knickknacks completed it.  What do you think?
sweet wallpaper + hunger games = wha???

cool owl from my great-grandma.  the blue owl is from the dollar section of Target.  he used to be black, but it didn't suit him.

  1. LOVE your take on the drawer bookshelf. I have lots of random drawers (don't even ask) to try this with. And, unrelated, I LOVE the doodly theme of your blog background on kraft paper. Gorgeous!

  2. Love your ideas. What you recommend for drawers that are rounded in the front?? I'm not sure what to do with them.
    Thank you

    1. Hmm, could you just set them on their sides? So that the rounded part of facing out to the sides of the bookcase?

I would consider just hanging them separately on the wall, maybe making an arrangement that way. Something like this: http://pinterest.com/pin/22588435601205316/
